A Little About Jason...

Winning BIS at the 2001 Basenji Club of Victoria Champ ShowSay hello to Jason - one of the star performers of the South Australian Basenji ring.

Jason arrived at Mzalia on the 4th September 1998, from his breeder, John Forbes of Baagna Basenjis in New South Wales, and little did we realise just how much he would change our lives. He gets his name from "Jason" of Jason and the Argonauts, a legendary character of Greek Mythology. He became Mzalia's 4th Australian Champion in fine style, when on Saturday 31st of July 1999, he went Best Exhibit in the Hound Group at the Broken Hill Dog Club Inc All Breeds Championship Show. He continued on his winning way to become our first Grand Champion on Saturday 5th October 2002 (having amassed no fewer then 19 Best in Groups along the way).

A very stylish and elegant individual, Jason has a beautiful rich red and white coat, excellent wrinkle, an exceptionally high earset, and lovely dark almond shaped eyes. You would be hard pressed to find a better top line, and he has a terrific shelf – something that you don’t see a lot of in the breed today. In the Show Ring he is confident, proud, arrogant and simply demands attention - a professional showman.

Jason on the move...On the move Jason is something else! Effortless movement combined with his lofty head carriage and the incredible reach and drive that he has makes him a very impressive dog to watch on the move. His out and back movement is excellent as well – straight and true. Jason really is an exceptional individual.

Jason is a great dog to Show, but around the house though, he is also a wonderful companion. Jason is the most amazing talker (which he seems to get from his grand-dad Aus Ch Helios Out O Africa), he loves cuddles, and just adores his buddy Flame (Aus Ch Eilsta Qwyt Kutani). He also loves playing with baby basenjis and will let them do just about anything to him.

Jason on the move...But if this is the Dr Jekyll side of his character, then there certainly is a Mr Hyde side to him as well - and it all revolves around FOOD.

Here at Mzalia, we thought Flame was a food pig - well that was until Jason arrived! He would sell his soul for even the smallest morsel of food. When he comes into the house, the first thing he does is check out any rubbish bins that have been left within reach, just in case there is a "munchy" about. Also, if he has to wait for his dinner, he certainly lets you know about it by breaking into a crescendo of yodels which soon turn into howls if he has to wait too long. In fact his breeder, John Forbes at one stage actually nick-named him "The Sherman Tank" because he would knock over all of the other puppies in order to get to the food bowl first!

Oh yes, and he also likes to run the toilet roll through the house as well.

Jason is from the only litter produced by his sire Aus Ch Azisha Buddy Boy (Buddy), who was Opposite Minor Puppy in Show at the Basenji Club of Victoria Specialty Show in 1996 under Michael Hughes-Hall (South Africa), and is from the second litter of his dam Aus Ch Baagna Racy N Ravishing (Red).

Aus Ch Baagna Racy N Ravishing on the move...Aus Ch Baagna Wotta JackpotA stunning bitch possessed of sublime movement, Red was RuBISS at the Basenji Club of Victoria Specialty Show in 1996 again under Michael Hughes-Hall (South Africa), and at stud she has already produced NZ Ch Baagna Ursucha Posser (Imp Aus), and from her last litter, the very impressive Aus Ch Baagna Wotta Jackpot. Jack is a multiple Best in Group Winner at Championship Show level. He also won the "Stars of Tomorrow" competition, an invitation only exhibition where the contestants are selected from the top winning puppies based on awards won at major shows. Jack was the first basenji to be invited to take part in this competition, let alone be successful in it.

From Jason's litter Red has produced:-

Wow - what a litter!

So "Red" is now proving herself to be a wonderful producer at stud. Red is a daughter of Aus Ch Baagna Lyka Hussy, a wonderful bitch who is now rapidly establishing her own dynasty of top class show dogs and producers. She in turn is a daughter of one of Australia's best Show Basenjis in Aus Ch Baagna Justa Fella, who during his career amassed over 1500 Challenge Points and went Best in Show at 3 All-Breeds Champ Shows - a great achievement for a Basenji in this Country.

Jason is a delightful dog to have around the house and we are very grateful to John Forbes for allowing him to become a very important and exciting member of our tribe.
