A Little About Flame...

Flame GaitingFlame was the third basenji acquired by us, and on 2nd August 1998 she became our third Australian Champion, at only just over 14 months of age. She was a very consistent Show Ring performer, and the foundation bitch of our Kennel.

A fine, elegant girl with a lot of poise and presence, Flame has so much going for her: a beautiful fine coat, good wrinkle, a lovely high earset and wonderful expression. She is also an exceptional mover - a true daisy-cutter action with tremendous reach and drive - a quality that more than one judge has praised her for during her career.

But it is not only the fact that she is such a wonderful show dog that has made her a star to us, but Flame is also the most enchanting dog outside of the ring as well. She is a wonderful companion, and has the most delightfully naughty nature that we have seen in a basenji.

She is simply personality plus! Bright, outgoing and vivacious, Flame is a loving and affectionate basenji: she adores cuddles and loves to sit on your lap. And she is also a wonderful talker. It is great when she throws back her head and gives you that round-mouthed "barroo" when you get home from work.

There is certainly never a dull moment with Flame around.

Head Study - Ch Eilsta Qwyt KutaniA very intelligent basenji, her native instincts lie close to the surface as she is also an excellent hunter - alas much to the detriment of the birdlife in our backyard. On more that one occasion I have seen Flame grab a bird on the wing. It is truly an amazing sight to see.

Even though she is now over 10 years of age, she can still catch birds on the wing!

Of course no one basenji is perfect and she has her vices too. First and foremost she is a food pig. She only has to hear the cupboard or refrigerator door open to be there standing at your feet. Nothing is sacred when there is food around!

Bred by Stan and Eileen Laycock of Eilsta Basenjis in Tasmania, Flame is "Baagna" by tradition and has a very interesting pedigree, featuring two instances of a "doubling-up" of litter mates in her first four generations. Look for the brother/sister combinations of Ch Baagna Justa Fella / Ch Baagna Justa Honey and Ch Wazazi Trybal Leader / Aus Grand Ch Wazazi Trybal Image.

She is from the first litter of her sire Aus Ch Baagna Racy N Blackk (Jet), who is a litter brother to Aus Ch Baagna Racy N Sootyy (BISS 1998 Basenji Club of New South Wales Champ Show and  RuBISS 1997 Basenji Club of New South Wales Champ Show) and Aus Ch Baagna Racy N Ravishing (Bitch CC and RuBISS 1996 Basenji Club of Victoria Champ Show - Judge: Mr Michael Hughes-Hall (South Africa)).

In addition to Flame, her litter brother Eilsta Qwyt Kaspa (Flash) and her litter sister Eilsta Qwyt Jaffa (Ellie) are also Australian Champions.

Flame is from the second litter of her dam Aus Ch Baagna Prize Copy (Cobee), and is the fourth of five Australian Champions that she has produced. Prior to Flame she has produced Aus Ch Eilsta Peekays Ituri and Aus Ch Eilsta Peekays Cassee (sired by Eilsta Neros Niangara) and now also Aus Ch Eilsta Qwyt Kaspa, Aus Ch Eilsta Qwyt Kutani and Aus Ch Eilsta Qwyt Jaffa.

Flame after winning Best Red & White Coat at the Victorian SpecialtyTwo of Cobee's pups, Aus Ch Eilsta Peekays Cassee and Aus Ch Eilsta Qwyt Kutani, have also won the prestigious "Best Red and White Coat" Class at the Basenji Club of Victoria Inc Championship Show, in 1997 and 1999 respectively. In 2000 Flame also added the "Best Adult Red and White Coat Class" from the Basenji Club of New South Wales Inc Speciality to her awards list. Her judge on that day was Mrs Irene Terry of Zizunga Basenjis in England.

Cobee's dam Aus Ch Baagna Native Lady is a half-sister to the wonderful show dog Aus Ch Baagna Justa Fella who during his career amassed over 1500 Challenge Points and went Best in Show at 3 All-Breeds Champ Shows - a great achievement for a Basenji in this Country.

Flame has also been a highly successful broodbitch producing 7 Champions, a Best in Show winner, and multiple Best in Group and All Breeds and Specialty Class in Show winners. She has also twice won Dam & Progeny Classes at Breed Specialties.

Flame is a wonderful girl, we are very grateful to Stan and Eileen for allowing such a charming basenji to share our lives.
