Debbie's Show Career
But our biggest thrills with Debbie have come at Breed Specialty Shows in particular. At the New South Wales Basenji Specialty Shows (which here in Australia is the closest Show we have to a National for Basenjis) she has an outstanding record: in 1999 under Mr Hans Lehtinen (Finland) she was 3rd in the large Baby Puppy Bitch class, in 2000 under Mrs Liz Cartledge (UK), she was 2nd in the large Junior Bitch Class, and then in 2001, she won the Intermediate Bitch Class, and then went on to Intermediate in Show under Mrs Judy McMurtrie (Queensland) to become Mzalia's first homebred Specialty Class in Show winner. In 2003 Debbie won the Australian Bred Bitch Class (like her mother did 3 years earlier), and was Opposite Australian Bred in Show under breed specialist Mrs Sandra Bridges (Jato Basenjis, USA). In 2004 she was 3rd in the large Australian Bred Bitch Class under Mr Simon Parsons (UK). Debbie was also Intermediate in Show at the 2001 Victorian Basenji Club Specialty Show under Mr Darren Bowey (Victoria) and in 2006, was 2nd (to her half-sister Aus Ch Mzalia Time Warp) in the Australian Bred Bitch Class at the Basenji Club of Victoria Specialty under Mr Wayne Douglas (Victoria), and 2nd in the Veteran Bitch 7-10 Years Class at the New South Wales Specialty Show.
On Saturday 17th March 2001, Debbie became the third Mzalia Champion in fine style, by going Runner-up in Group at the Barmera-Berri Show Society All Breeds Championship Show. Since then Debbie has also added two All Breeds Champ Show Best Exhibit in Group awards to her name. Debbie has been an easy going and fun dog to show during her career, but she has earned her retirement and is now only shown at Specialties and selected All Breeds shows, where she continues to do well.
Judges' Critiques..."...handsome powerful-moving bitch of a different type, not so short in
back or "all of a piece" as 1 or 2. Good feminine head, could be a
touch darker in eye but had to be of a very good type & quality to earn a
place in this excellent class" "Another pretty bitch with the correct outline type,
short bodied, up on leg, level topline standing, very good coat colour. Typey
head with good wrinkle, dark eyes and good skull to muzzle proportions." "good head qualities... excellent coat and condition, pliant
skin, excellent body" "Good shape with nice head and expression. Very promising
puppy."
